Donna Marie Francis, Jan 3, 1932-Jan 5, 2013, died at home surrounded by her loving family after a brief battle with cancer. She was born in Minnesota, and came to California with her parents in 1941. She married in 1948 and had 3 children, one of whom died as an infant. The Francis family moved to southern Oregon in 1959. She always enjoyed camping, painting, and the outdoors. She had an art gallery in Jacksonville Oregon, and obtained a Bachelors degree in fine art at Southern Oregon College. She designed costumes for the Shakespeare Theater, and worked at Harry and Davids for a number of years. She divorced in 1968, and moved to Portland, Oregon. There she met her life partner, Douglas Granville in 1972. She worked at Maceys a number of years. By 1986 she became a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, specializing in mental health. She and Doug moved to Sonoma County in 2000 and continued with her occupational therapy work until 2002 when she had her knees replaced a second time. After that, she worked at the Curves gym in Forestville until 2006. She also became a volunteer for Food For Thought,Sonoma County AIDS Food Bank, helping as a "Food Fairy" with clients, in the office, and baked cookies for them with the Sisters of Perpetual Cookies,where she was lovingly known as Sister Gum Drop.
She is survived by her companion, Douglas Granville, her daughters, Randi Francis, Jane Kurtz, and Nancy Tello, her son, Brad Francis, her brother, Eric Haagenson, and sister Naomi Mentzer. The family is grateful to Kaiser and Sutter VNA Hospice for their excellent care.
A Memorial Service will be held Sat Jan 12, 2-4pm in the Grinton Chapel at the Center for Spiritual Living, 2075 Occidental Rd, Santa Rosa, CA. There will be a potluck of finger food.
